How to Start Selling Online: 5 Clear Steps for a Small Business
A step-by-step guide for an owner who wants to sell online but doesn’t know where to start: from picking a product to the first orders. Plain language, with examples, numbers and common mistakes.
Plain and to the point: you can start selling online in a couple of weeks, even with a small business and no IT department. Five steps: pick what to sell → present the product and price → make a storefront with an “Order” button → set up payment and delivery → get the first orders and build repeat sales. Here’s how an ordinary owner does it, without the jargon.
Step 1. Choose what to sell online
Start with what:
- already sells well offline or in social;
- is easy to ship (not too fragile, not too bulky);
- has a clear price and doesn’t need long fittings/approvals.
Don’t try to list everything at once. 10–20 popular items beat 500 nobody searches for.
Step 2. Present the product so people buy it
Online, people buy with their eyes. Each item needs:
- 3–5 clear photos in good light;
- the name and price big (not “ask me for the price”);
- a short description: what it is, for whom, why take it;
- answers to common questions: sizes, timelines, warranty, delivery.
Step 3. Build a storefront: a store or a simple page
Two honest options to start:
| Option | When it fits | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Simple page with an “Order” button | 5–30 products, services, demand test | enquiry to messenger/email |
| Full online store | many products, need a catalogue and online payment | cart, payment, delivery, customer account |
You can start with the first and grow into the second without losing customers or rebuilding from scratch.
Step 4. Set up payment and delivery
To carry a customer to purchase you need:
- payment: card online, cash on delivery, or a payment link — at least one easy method;
- delivery: courier/pickup/post with a clear price and timeframe;
- confirmation: a short message to the customer “order received, here’s the number and date”.
The fewer steps between “I want it” and “paid”, the more purchases. Every extra step loses some people.
Step 5. Get the first orders and bring people back for more
- First orders: ask friends/regulars to buy online and leave a review; run a little ad on your best-selling item.
- Repeat sales: collect customers’ phones and emails (with consent) — winning back an old customer is cheaper than finding a new one.
Real examples
- 40 eco sellers lived in Instagram with manual payment and delivery tracking. They launched their own platform — $200K+ in sales in year one, repeat purchases +45% thanks to cashback (EcoMarket).
- A cosmetics store built a fast 2-step checkout and a proper storefront — +180% sales in 4 months (Solomia Beauty).
Bottom line
Starting to sell online is easier than it looks: pick your best-sellers, present them with a price, add a clear “Order” button, set up payment and delivery — and take orders. Improve the rest along the way.
