How to Get Your Business Online: A Simple Plan for Owners With No Experience
No website, little time and unsure where to start? A step-by-step plan to get an ordinary business online: 6 clear steps, real numbers, common mistakes and what to start this week.
In plain words: to start selling online you don’t need “everything at once”. Six clear steps are enough: decide what to sell and to whom → make one decent page with a way to enquire → get found on Google and Maps → set up lead capture → run a little advertising → watch the numbers and improve. Here’s how an ordinary owner does it, with no technical background and no big budget.
Step 1. Understand what you sell and to whom
Before building a site, answer three questions in plain words:
- What you sell (the one service or product people most often come to you for)?
- Who the customer is (city, age, what they care about: price, speed, reliability)?
- Why they need it (what problem of theirs you solve)?
That’s enough to start. You don’t need a “brand for 10 years” — you need one clear service and one clear customer.
Step 2. Make one decent page, not a “dream website”
To start, one page is enough, and it has:
- a headline in plain words: what you do, for whom, for how much (e.g. “Stretch ceilings in [city] from $X per m² — free measurement”);
- 3–4 reasons to choose you;
- photos of your work or product;
- a price or “from…” — this removes the customer’s biggest fear;
- a big “Enquire” or “Call” button;
- reviews and contacts.
Step 3. Get found: Google and Maps
People search for services. Two free moves:
- Google Business Profile — your listing on Maps: address, phone, hours, photos, reviews. For a local business (salon, service, café, repair) it’s a source of enquiries almost immediately.
- Getting the page into search — the right headings and description so Google knows which queries to show you for.

Step 4. Set up so enquiries aren’t lost
The worst thing is getting a customer and not replying. Make sure an enquiry lands with you right away:
- a tappable phone number (people call in one tap from mobile);
- a WhatsApp/Telegram button — many prefer writing to calling;
- a 1–2 field form (number and name), not a ten-question form;
- an alert to your phone the moment someone enquires.
Rule: reply fast. A customer answered within 5 minutes becomes a buyer far more often than one who waits until evening.
Step 5. Run a little advertising — and see what works
Once the page and lead capture are ready, bring in your first people:
- paid ads (Google, social) — quick enquiries, but only while you pay;
- search and Maps — free enquiries that build over months.
Start with a small budget on one service and watch where calls come from. Don’t spread money over everything at once.
Step 6. Watch the numbers and improve
Once a week, answer three simple questions:
| Question | Where to look | What to do if it’s low |
|---|---|---|
| How many people visited? | visit counter | more ads / better headlines |
| How many enquired? | phone, form, messengers | simplify the form, add price and reviews |
| What did it cost? | ad budget ÷ enquiries | shift money to what works |
Real numbers, not promises
- A cosmetics store, after launching a proper page with fast checkout, stopped losing enquiries and grew sales 180% in 4 months — Solomia Beauty case.
- A mountain hotel moved from phone to online booking on its site — 2.5× more bookings per season and no aggregator fees — Verkhovyna case.
- 40 sellers moved off Instagram to their own platform — $200K+ in sales in year one — EcoMarket case.
The common thread: they stopped losing customers, because a clear path appeared — “saw it → enquired → bought”.
What to start this week
Bottom line
Getting online isn’t about technology — it’s about order: one clear page so people find you, and so enquiries aren’t lost. Start small this week — and within a month you’ll see your first customers from the internet.
