SEO & Traffic Redesign
Website Redesign Without Losing Rankings: a Checklist and a 90-Day Plan
Roughly half of redesigns lose 20–60% of organic traffic in the first months. How to capture an SEO baseline, preserve URLs and links, build a redirect map and monitor rankings — a step-by-step plan by DEXA.
In short: a redesign is not “a new look” — it is relocating an existing SEO asset onto a new architecture. The sequence: 1) capture a baseline (rankings, traffic, donor pages), 2) keep URLs or ship a 100% 301 map, 3) carry over structured data and meta, 4) launch on staging and run an acceptance crawl, 5) monitor rankings for 90 days after launch. At DEXA the baseline and recovery guarantee are written into the contract — redesign service from $1,400.
Google ranks signals, not mockups: content on a URL, inbound links, internal linking, speed and user behavior. A redesign touches all five at once. If the design team does not know which pages hold the rankings, it is not redesigning — it is demolishing an asset.
Step 1. SEO baseline: what exactly are you risking
Step 2. Architecture: the URL is the most expensive resource
The safest path is a redesign without changing URLs — same slugs, new shell. If the architecture must change (a move to headless CMS, new section logic):
- A 1:1 redirect map for every legacy URL.
- No “nearest page” redirects: a service page must not point to the homepage — match by intent.
- Legacy URLs stay alive in the sitemap history; inbound links keep working for years.
Step 3. Carry the signals: meta, schema, content
Structured data (Product, Article, FAQ, Breadcrumb) routinely gets lost during CMS migrations — verify it per template, not per site. Copy, alt text and internal links move as a checklist, not “somehow”. Architecture details in the headless CMS guide.
Step 4. Staging and acceptance audit
Before release: full crawl of the staging subdomain — broken links, duplicate meta, speed (performance work rides along for free, because a static rebuild usually lifts Lighthouse from 40–60 to 90+), accessibility, mobile rendering.
Step 5. Launch and 90 days of watch
Checklist: 10 items before signing a redesign contract
- The baseline is documented and attached to the contract.
- Redirect map covers 100% of URLs — not “as time allows”.
- Schema and meta migration is an explicit line item.
- Staging environment with an acceptance crawl.
- A written rank-recovery plan with owners and deadlines.
- 90 days of post-launch monitoring included.
- Content transfer responsibility is assigned.
- CWV guarantee after redesign.
- GA4, goals and e-commerce tracking survive the move.
- Code and admin access belong to you, not the studio.
