How to Raise Average Order Value: 9 Mechanics

Upsell, cross-sell, bundles, free-shipping thresholds, tariffs, subscriptions, cart add-ons and loyalty tiers — with ready wording and honest expectations.

How to Raise Average Order Value: 9 Mechanics

Short answer: raising the average order value is cheaper than buying new traffic: the customer who already decided “to buy” has paid for the whole campaign, and “+1 item” to their cart is almost pure margin. The working set is 9 mechanics: bundles, “customers also bought”, pay-the-difference to free delivery, a higher tariff at the decision moment, checkout add-ons, subscriptions for consumables, service packages, tiered loyalty and the last-step upsell. In a store this yields +10–25% per order; in services, +15–30% with the right offer.

First, set your baseline

Open analytics (GA4 e-commerce or a CRM export) and compute for the last 30 days: revenue ÷ orders = your current average order value. Write it down: without a “before”, any growth is self-deception. The mechanics below are each described so you can turn one on this week.

Mechanic 1. Bundles instead of “half-price”

“Cream + serum + micellar water = 1,190 ₴ instead of 1,350 separately” works better than a discount on one item: the client does not feel “fished for an extra purchase”, they feel a ready solution at a better price. For services — a “visit package” (3 procedures at −10% with pre-booked dates). Template wording: “[Product] + [consumable] + [small delight] — bundle at −N%”.

Mechanic 2. “Customers also bought” — cross-sell with logic

Not random recommendations but complementary logic: to a phone — film and case; to a coffee machine — beans; to a haircut — styling. Rules: no more than 2–3 items, add-on price ≤30% of the main product. On the product page this block beats any email; at checkout — an “add to order” block in one click without cart reload.

Mechanic 3. The free-delivery threshold (and a progress bar)

If free delivery starts at 1,500 ₴ and the median cart is 1,100 ₴ — a “400 ₴ to free delivery” bar in the header/cart raises AOV more visibly than any promo mailing: people hate leaving value “unpaid to the threshold”. In services the analogue is “free engineer visit from 2,000 ₴” — the client adds work instead of paying for logistics.

Mechanic 4. Three tariffs instead of one price

“Basic / Optimal / Premium” with the middle one highlighted as popular. Psychology: without choice people buy the cheap option; with choice they buy “the sensible one”. For a studio site: “landing / corporate / store” with a “most often chosen” shelf; for B2B — “price list / price list + measurement / turnkey with guarantee”. AOV effect: 15–30% from migrating part of clients to the middle tier.

Mechanic 5. Upsell at the decision moment, not before

“Vacuum without a bag — 4,999 ₴; with auto-empty and HEPA — 6,499 ₴” — offer “the better version” at the model-selection step, not on the homepage. For services — “+2 years of warranty for 300 ₴” at checkout. Upsell converts 5–7% of “ready-to-buy” visitors, which at +30% order value is a net win.

Mechanic 6. Subscriptions and one-click reorder

Consumables (coffee, pet food, cosmetics, filters, detergents) are a direct road to “every 30 days, cancel anytime”. A subscription’s order value is measured across the year, and it is predictable. For non-subscription categories the simplified version works: a “repeat order” button in the account or in an email after 30–40 days — automatic email chains are described here.

Mechanic 7. Service packaging: a package instead of a single service

A client who “just needs a haircut” gets “haircut + treatment + styling” as one package — cheaper than separately, more expensive than one service. The criterion: the package saves the client time or nerves, not only money (“complete look”, “pre-season prep”).

Mechanic 8. Tiered loyalty, not flat cashback

“Silver from 10,000 ₴: +5% and early access; Gold from 30,000 ₴: free delivery always”. Tiers create the upgrade game and hold the client in the category; flat cashback without tiers simply costs you margin. Implemented in the CRM client card — the store+CRM link is dissected in site + CRM + 1C integration.

Mechanic 9. The checkout “grab-bag”: the last step

Cart → “add to order: batteries / gloves / a 49 ₴ sample” — cheap small things with high margin, a two-second decision. Rule: one block maximum, one click, removal just as easy. This is the last point where you can raise the order before the “pay” button.

+10–25%a realistic store AOV lift from “bundles + cart add-ons + delivery threshold” (our observations across projects)
≤30%the add-on price relative to the main product — above that a “small thing” stops being an impulse
1 clickany “add to order” must take exactly one tap

What needs development and what is only text

Text/offer without code: service packages, tariff wordings, “customers also bought” from existing recommendations, delivery thresholds. Configuration/development required: dynamic bundles and prices, the free-delivery progress bar, subscriptions and “reorder” emails, CRM loyalty tiers, the no-reload checkout add-on block. These are exactly what we build inside e-commerce development — starting always with the math of which mechanic gives net profit at your margin (methodology: how to calculate store ROI).

Case

Solomia Beauty: on top of the store redesign we added “skincare by type” bundles, a “customers also bought” block, checkout add-ons and a CRM card with purchase history. Result in 4 months: conversion +180% — and average order value grew about 15% specifically from bundles and add-ons, without a single extra hryvnia of ad budget.

FAQ

Bottom line

Average order value is not “promo magic” but nine practical mechanics switched on in sequence: bundles, logical cross-sell, delivery thresholds, tariffs, decision-moment upsell, subscriptions, packages, loyalty tiers and the last checkout add-on.
