Video on Your Website: When It Helps, When It Hurts
Video is the strongest trust format and the easiest way to lose visitors on a slow page. Which videos a small business needs, where to place them and what they cost.
In short: one honest two-minute video of your workshop beats fifty stock-photo slides — because video is the only format where a stranger can see your real face, your real work and your real manner before deciding to trust you. But video is also the heaviest element on a page: badly embedded, it eats the load speed that does more for sales than the video itself. The working rule: three types of video max, placed with purpose, loaded lazily. Below — which three, where, and at what cost.
What video actually changes on a business site
The mechanism is simple. A visitor can’t judge your competence from a “quality guaranteed” sentence — there’s no way to verify it. From a video, the brain extracts in 30 seconds: does this person know what they’re talking about, what their real workshop looks like, how they speak to clients. No fake passes that filter — which is exactly why video became a trust currency.
The three videos a small business genuinely needs
1. A founder or team video (“who am I buying from”) — 60–120 seconds
One person, to camera, in your actual workspace: what you do, for whom, why you do it this way. Not corporate theatre — a phone on a tripod and a quiet room are enough; sincerity beats production value, and viewers feel the difference.
Where it works: homepage after the first screen, About page, premium service pages. How the About page builds trust — video is its strongest element.
2. A process or product video (“how it works / what I get”) — 60–90 seconds
How the furniture is assembled, how the order is packed, how the service unfolds step by step, how the product works in hand. For e-commerce — one video per key product or category beats a gallery of renders.
Where it works: on the service/product page next to price and the “Order” button — the exact moment of hesitation. This is the video that converts.
3. A video testimonial from a client — 30–60 seconds
Two sentences from a real customer on camera: what problem they had, what happened after. One such video outweighs a whole page of textual reviews — faces and voices are the oldest trust filter humans have. Customer reviews guide covers the text version; video is the same with sound.
Where it works: in the reviews block, near the final CTA, in social channels.
Which videos you don’t need
- Corporate presentation of the company for 5 minutes with “missions” and aerial shots. Nobody has ever finished watching one — including your clients. If it must exist, make it 60 seconds.
- Animated logo intro before the site loads. It adds 3 seconds to every visit for the pleasure of seeing your logo spin. Zero conversions, negative UX.
- Stock video with generic people. Handshakes, smiling actors in call centres — the brain recognises fake instantly and trust drops below what text alone gave you.
- Video for video’s sake on every page. A 20-second clip with no message wastes bandwidth of the entire page — visitors pay for it with their mobile data.
Where most owners mess up: speed. Here is how to avoid it
A heavy page kills conversion faster than any good video saves it — see how speed affects revenue. The four rules of fast video on a site:
For stores and services we also keep an alternative text path for every video: captions, descriptions, transcript. Two reasons: most mobile viewers start with sound off, and search engines and AI assistants can’t watch — they read. AI search increasingly uses your page text to decide whether to cite you.
What video costs: the honest range
| Type | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Founder video, filmed on a phone + edit | $100–300 | The fastest win; a ring light and a quiet room |
| Product process video (1 category) | $300–800 | Worth repeating per key category |
| Client testimonial (1–3 people) | $0–500 | Ask clients; many film on their own phone happily |
| Studio showreel for a creative brand | $800–2,500 | The premium tier; only if visuals ARE the service |
| Embed and optimise for speed | part of site work | Click-to-load, facades, lazy-load, alt text |
The math to decide: if even one video adds 10% more completed enquiries, on services from $1,100+ (pricing) it pays for the whole shoot in one project.
What DEXA does with video
We build the video slot into the page design before the video exists — poster, play button, description, lazy-load facade — so adding footage is a copy-replace, not a redesign. Homepage hero scenes, product facades with click-to-load, portfolio reels as silent loops — all shipped with green Core Web Vitals, because a fast site and a video site are not mutually exclusive. See web development and our showreel example.
Bottom line
Video is not an upgrade from “a site” to “a fancy site” — it’s a specific trust tool with three working shapes: who you are, how it works, what clients say. Film one at a time, place beside the action button, load it via a click-to-play facade, and keep the page fast. One honest video will outperform a year of abstract “we guarantee quality” text.
