How to Accept Payments on Your Website, in Plain Terms
What a payment gateway is, which services work in Ukraine (LiqPay, Fondy, WayForPay, Stripe), what it costs and when a payment page beats pay-at-delivery.
In short: accepting card payments on your site is not a scary banking project — it’s a service you connect in 1–3 days, without any technical skills, for a commission of about 2–3% per transaction. The customer enters card details on your site, the payment goes through the bank’s secure system, and the money lands in your account the next day. The real question isn’t “how” but “which service to choose and when payment on the site actually pays off.” Below is everything in plain language, with numbers.
What actually happens in the 3 seconds between “Pay” and the receipt
- The customer presses the button on your site → a secure payment window opens (either on your site or a hosted page of the payment service).
- The service sends the card data through the bank’s network, the issuing bank confirms or declines.
- The customer sees “Payment accepted” and receives a receipt; you see the transaction in your dashboard, and the money arrives on your account (usually next business day).
Everything the business owner must do personally: register with a payment service, pass verification (documents of your FOP/company), sign a contract, and let a specialist connect the button on the site. That’s all.
Which services work in Ukraine — and how they differ
| Service | Commission (typical) | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| LiqPay | ~2.7%+ | Stores of any size, most recognised | PrivatBank ecosystem, instant transfers between Privat cards |
| Fondy | ~2.5–3% | Small stores, services, donations | Friendly dashboard, good docs, quick approval |
| WayForPay | ~2.5–3% | Services with bookings, instalments | Split payment option, invoices |
| Stripe | ~2.9%+$0.30 | Only if you have a foreign entity | The global standard — but needs a company abroad, not for FOPs inside Ukraine |
| PayPal | varies | International clients who insist on it | Withdrawal friction for local businesses |
For a Ukrainian store or service working with domestic customers: the practical choice is LiqPay, Fondy or WayForPay — they’re equivalent for 90% of small business needs. Compare the exact commission at contract stage and pick the dashboard you find easier to read. Don’t over-engineer this.
What it costs: the honest calculation
- Connection: free to ~$100 (one-off setup by a specialist if you don’t want to touch code).
- Monthly fee: most services charge $0 for standard plans — you only pay per transaction.
- Commission: ~2.5–3% of each payment. On a ₴300 order the service keeps ~₴8–9.
- Hidden cost nobody tells you about: declines and chargebacks are rare for honest businesses, but keep receipts and delivery tracking anyway — that’s your entire “dispute defence”.
The counter-question owners always ask: “if the service takes 3%, why not skip online payment and take payment on delivery?” Run the numbers: online payment costs 3% but typically lifts conversion of the checkout by 15–30% versus COD, because the decision is finished in the moment of intent. On repeat orders the difference is paid for by the second order alone.
When payments on the site make sense — and when they don’t
Connect payments immediately if:
- You sell goods online and the customer chooses and pays without calling you.
- You take prepayments/deposits for services (booking a table, a slot with a specialist, a tour). See online booking with prepayment — a deposit is the single most effective no-show protection.
- You sell digital: consultations, guides, courses, access.
- You want 24/7 sales: an order paid at 11 pm is money while you sleep.
Don’t force it if:
- Your full sales cycle happens over the phone with a custom quote (complex B2B projects) — a request form is enough at this stage.
- Average order under ~₴100: the commission is small, but user hesitation about entering a card for coffee is disproportionate — test it.
- Your customers are COD-loyal retirees in one region — offer payment, but don’t remove the old path on day one. Let behaviour decide.
What a customer checks in the last second before typing card details
This is where checkout money is actually lost:
- The padlock (HTTPS). No SSL — the browser literally screams “not secure” on the payment page. An own domain with a certificate is the base; see domain basics.
- Familiar payment logo. LiqPay/Fondy/Visa/Mastercard icons near the button raise trust more than any text about security.
- Total before payment. Show the final amount including delivery on the cart page, not at the payment screen. Surprise +₴90 for shipping is the number-one reason for abandoned carts.
- No account required. Forced registration before payment kills conversion harder than any design flaw. Guest checkout always.
- Instant confirmation. “Thank you, your order #123 is confirmed” + SMS/receipt on the same screen. Silence after payment creates anxiety and support calls.
How the button gets on the site (two ways)
- Ready integrations. For WooCommerce, Shopify, or most store platforms, payment services have ready modules — installation is a couple of hours plus testing a real payment of 1 hryvnia.
- Custom checkout. On a bespoke store (Astro/headless like our Solomia Beauty case), the payment API is wired into the checkout logic directly. This is where you can add deposit flows, partial payments, instalments — the stuff platforms can’t do.
Either way, before launch you run a real payment test: pay yourself, watch the money arrive, check the receipt, email notification, and the order status in admin. Takes 30 minutes, prevents 99% of launch-day panic.
What DEXA does with payments
On store projects we set up checkout with card payment end-to-end: choose the PSP by your average order and client geography, wire payment confirmation into the CRM/order admin, connect receipts and notification emails, and run the test-payment checklist before launch. For services we add deposit booking so a reserved slot is paid, not promised. E-commerce development has the details.
Bottom line
Card payments on the site are connected in a few days, cost you nothing fixed, and take roughly 3% per payment — which is normally repaid by the growth in checkout completion and the ability to sell at 11 pm on Saturday. Choose one of the local services by commission and dashboard, connect with the test payment, and show the final price honestly on the cart. That is 90% of the whole story.
